Surgical Treatments for Menstruation Problems
Less commonly, more severe cases of menstrual problems may be caused by endometrial polyps, fibroids, or adenomyosis. In these cases an in-office or surgical procedure may be the best option to manage these conditions. In many cases a simple in-office procedure, can diagnose and treat the problem. In other cases, our skilled gynecologists will treat the condition with operative hysteroscopy or minimally-invasive laparoscopic daVinci robotic surgery to manage the issue.
Both laparoscopic and minimally invasive daVinci robotic surgeries utilize very small incisions – resulting in little pain, less downtime, and a more rapid recovery than traditional surgical methods. Dr. Vikas Merchia is one of only a few elite robotic surgeons who also performs single incision laparoscopic (incisionless) surgery, because after it heals, you usually can’t see the incision. Dr. Vikas Merchia has completed rigorous training to allow him to offer this and other daVinci robotic surgery to offer the best treatment options to his patients.
Hysteroscopy for Heavy Periods
A Hysteroscopy is an in-office procedure that enables our gynecologists to look inside the uterus to diagnose and treat uterine conditions – especially those associated with heavy or abnormal bleeding.
A thin, lighted tube attached to a lens called a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix, into the uterine cavity to to examine the cervix and uterus.
During a diagnostic hysteroscopy the doctor can find the cause of your problems or confirm results of other tests. Diagnostic hysteroscopy can also be used to help identify the cause of infertility or miscarriages – or to evaluate uterine adhesions, polyps, and fibroids.
During an operative hysteroscopy, the physician views the inside of the cervix and uterus while correcting an abnormal condition right in our office – such as removing small adhesions and fibroids. Dr. Merchia uses tiny instruments that are inserted through the hysteroscope to correct the condition. This state-of-the-art, minimally invasive in-office procedure can often help avoid the need for an inconvenient or expensive surgery or hospitalization.
Endometrial Ablation for Heavy Periods
We offer the Minerva Endometrial Ablation System which is the latest, most advanced treatment for heavy periods. It is a non-surgical one-time treatment performed right in our office that only takes 3 or 4 minutes. Minerva Endometrial Ablation removes the lining of the uterus using a thin, soft wand inserted through the vagina into the uterus. The tip of the wand generates a specific frequency of light and heat energy that removes the uterine lining.
In clinical studies 93% of women had their periods reduced to a normal or lower than normal level – while 72% stopped having menstrual bleeding (periods) entirely! This state-of-the-art procedure also can improve premenstrual symptoms (PMS), and is covered by most insurance.
Minerva Endometrial Ablation offers a healthy and natural alternative to hormones, IUDs, or surgery. There are no incisions and only local anesthetic is needed. Like any endometrial ablation, it is not safe to become pregnant afterwards. So the procedure is only recommended for women who are done having children. It is still possible to become pregnant after the Minerva treatment, so discuss your birth control options with Dr. Merchia.
