TYPES OF BIRTH CONTROL
Birth Control Pills
Lasts: Must be Taken Daily
Birth control pills contain hormones that stop a woman from producing eggs, so pregnancy can’t happen. The hormones also thicken the mucus in the cervix, which serves to block sperm so it can’t impregnate an egg. Birth control pills can also be prescribed to help manage PMS and difficult or heavy periods.
Birth Control Implant
Lasts: Up to 5 Years
The birth control implant called Nexplanon (note: older versions were called Implanon) is inserted by the physician into the patient’s arm. It is a tiny device – about the same size as a matchstick – that releases a hormone called progestin into the women’s system to stop her from getting pregnant.
Birth Control Shot
Lasts: 3 Months
The Birth Control Shot Depo-Provera is an injection that a woman gets once every three months. Also called the Depo Shot, it contains the hormone progestin which prevents a woman from ovulating so she can’t become pregnant. It also thickens the vaginal mucus that can block sperm from being able to fertilize an egg.
NuvaRing
Lasts: Must be Replaced Monthly
The NuvaRing is a hormone-releasing device that is worn inside the vagina. The vaginal lining absorbs the estrogen and progestin that the ring releases. It prevents pregnancy by stopping sperm from meeting the egg and fertilizing it.
IUD
Lasts: Up to 12 Years
An “Intrauterine Device” – or IUD for short – is a tiny, plastic T-shaped device that’s placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It can last up to twelve years. IUDs are a reversible form of birth control, and is one of the most effective methods of preventing pregnancy.
Birth Control Patch
Lasts: Must be Replaced Weekly
“The Patch” is worn on the skin (transdermally) on the abdomen, upper arm, buttocks, or back. A new patch is worn every week for 3 weeks – with a week off coinciding with menstruation – before repeating. The patch releases hormones that prevent pregnancy.
