Microneedling for Acne Scars
Microneedling is a state of the art treatment that uses ultra-fine needles that create microscopic pricks in the skin. This activates the skin’s natural healing and rebuilding processes – stimulating the skin to produce more collagen, in an effort to heal the tiny wounds from the needles.
As the new collagen is naturally formed it begins to fill in and smooth out any imperfections in the skin – including fine lines, wrinkles, and even acne scars.
PRP Microneedling for Acne Scars
The effects of microneedling on acne scars are further enhanced by combining the treatments with vitamin C and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma).
Platelets contain the body’s natural healing factors. We extract the PRP from the patient’s own blood and concentrate it using a centrifuge. We then apply the PRP during the microneedling process – where it penetrates deep into the dermis and stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities and collagen production.
PRP has been used in sports medicine for over a decade to naturally regenerate injured joints. It is also gaining popularity as a highly effective, non-surgical method of regrowing hair. Recently it has been clinically proven to be highly effective at treating acne scars, as well.
Unlike other acne scar corrective treatments, such as certain laser therapies, microneedling is safe for all skin types – including darker skin tones and thin and sensitive skin as well. This is because microneedling doesn’t damage or “ablate” (remove) the outer layer of skin, like lasers or peels do.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, microneedling treatments work best for acne scars that are depressed — not raised. If you have raised acne scars, building more collagen will not help – however, one of our other acne scar treatments like Icon IPL laser may be of benefit!
