Endometriosis
Endometriosis is an extremely painful condition in which uterine lining tissue (endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. It can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and pelvic lining, where it continues to bleed with each menstrual cycle. The blood then becomes trapped with no way to exit the body. This results in intense pain and irritation – and eventually scar tissue and adhesions develop that can cause the internal organs to stick to one another.
A woman suffering from endometriosis will generally experience cramping and menstrual pain that is much worse than other women. And when endometriosis is left untreated it can worsen over time to the point of causing fertility issues.
The good news is that the caring and experienced OBGYNs at ESP Medical offer several highly effective, minimally invasive treatments for endometriosis.
We are a state-of-the-art medical practice offering the most advanced diagnostic & treatment options for endometriosis. TREATMENTS FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS
Non-Surgical Treatment for Endometriosis
In many cases hormone therapy is an effective treatment for endometriosis. Medications can be prescribed that reduce the amount of estrogen the body produces, to reduce menstrual bleeding. Other hormonal medications can prevent menstrual periods entirely – which reduces the inflammation and makes scars and ovarian cysts less likely.
Contraceptives such as birth control pills, patches, and vaginal rings that contain both estrogen and progestin may be prescribed. Or, progestin-only contraceptives such as birth control pills, shots, and IUDs may be used to eliminate periods altogether.
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) drugs can also be used to block the production of ovarian-stimulating hormones, causing endometrial tissue to shrink. In other cases progestin inhibitors and aromatase inhibitors may be prescribed by our experienced and caring gynecologists.
Surgical Treatment for Endometriosis
In more severe cases, conservative surgery to remove the endometriosis – while leaving the uterus and ovaries intact – can decrease endometriosis pain while also increasing the woman’s chances of being able to successfully conceive.
Our skilled OBGYNs can diagnose and treat endometriosis with minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, daVinci robotic surgery, or Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) to operate through a single incision which when healed is almost invisible, i.e. incisionless surgery.
Most of the time, if possible resection of endometriosis is performed which is more effective and definitively diagnostic of endometriosis rather than pure visual assertion which can be flawed.
If the physician finds endometriosis, he can also remove the unwanted endometrial tissue growths during the procedure, either by surgically cutting them off, or by cauterizing them off with a laser or other technique.
