How Stem Cell Hair Restoration Works
The stem cells used to regrow hair are completely derived from the patient’s own body. We do NOT use embryo stem cells, umbilical stem cells, or stem cells obtained from third parties in our stem cell hair restoration process.
The stem cell hair restoration process begins by extracting a few ounces of fat from the patient’s belly using a type of “mini” liposuction procedure. After the fat is removed from the patient’s abdominal area, the stem cells are isolated utilizing a state-of-the-art centrifuge (“spinning down”) process. Once the stem cells have been isolated and purified, Dr. Merchia will reintroduce them into the scalp via an injection of a mix of saline and stem cells. A topical anesthetic may be used to ensure the patient’s complete comfort during the stem cell re-injection process.
The fat extraction process only takes about 20 minutes. The patient can then relax, sleep, read or check their phone while the stem cells are prepared. The re-injection typically takes around an hour, depending upon the size and number of areas to be treated. The entire stem cell hair restoration appointment should take less than 2 or 3 hours.

Is stem cell hair loss treatment safe?
Stem cell hair restoration is an extremely safe procedure when conducted in a sterile medical environment, by a licensed physician, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment, like ESP Medical in the greater Boston area. Because stem cell hair restoration involves the transfer of blood, it should never be attempted out-of-the-country or in a salon, spa or other non-medical facility.

Some patients may notice tiny marks where the mini liposuction took place, but carefully following aftercare instructions will minimize the possibility of scarring. Some patients may also experience some slight soreness after the anesthetic wears off – but this is easily managed with over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, and should resolve in a few days.
When will I see the results of stem cell hair loss treatment?
Individual results of stem cell hair loss treatment depends upon each individual patient’s unique healing process, the degree of hair loss being treated, the size of the area, and even the speed with which the patient’s hair grows. However, most patients report seeing the beginning of new hair growth in just a few weeks, while some may have to wait a few months to see noticeable results.
As with any medical treatment, each hair loss patient is different and results will vary from person to person.
